Cyber Security That Doesn’t Need a Doom Soundtrack
Most cyber security pages open by trying to scare you.
We’d rather just protect you.
We help Yorkshire businesses stay safe from the stuff that actually goes wrong – dodgy emails, dodgy passwords, the odd dodgy click – without the jargon, the fear, or the sense that you need a degree in computer science to understand your own protection.
The Honest Truth About Cyber Security and Small Businesses
Here’s the thing nobody selling cyber security likes to say out loud: you are probably not being targeted by a hooded genius in a dark room. What actually gets most Yorkshire businesses is far more boring – a convincing looking email, a reused password, a laptop that hasn’t had an update in months.
That’s the good news, weirdly. The boring stuff is the fixable stuff.
The trouble is, most small businesses are protected by a patchwork – some antivirus from a few years back, a firewall nobody’s checked, and a quiet hope that it’ll be fine. It usually is fine. Right up until the morning it isn’t.
That’s the bit we fix. Quietly, in plain English, before it becomes a very bad afternoon.
Where are you on the map?
Every business we meet is somewhere on the same journey. No judgement – most people are further back than they’d like to admit, and that’s completely normal. See which one sounds like you.

Crossing Your Fingers
Protection is "whatever came with the laptops." Passwords get reused, reset, and occasionally written on a Post-it. Nobody's quite sure if the backups work, and you'd rather not find out the hard way. It's held together with good intentions and a bit of luck.

Finding your feet
You've got some of the right things - antivirus, maybe MFA on email, a backup somewhere. But it grew bit by bit, set up by whoever was handy at the time. Nobody's sure where the gaps are, and "we should really sort that properly" has been on the list for a while.

Quietly Bulletproof
Threats get stopped before they reach anyone. Every device is protected and up to date. Your team knows a dodgy email when they see one. If something does slip through, there's a plan - and a backup that actually restores. Security runs in the background like a smoke alarm you never have to think about.
Most businesses are somewhere between the first two. Our job is to get you to the third – and keep you there. Calmly, in plain English, at a pace that suits you.
We know a thing or two about keeping things secure when the stakes are high – our founder, Adam, spent his Navy years making sure critical systems never went down and never got compromised. “Hope it’s fine” was never a security strategy at sea. It still isn’t here.
The Threats, Untangled
“Cyber threats” sounds like one big terrifying blob. It’s really just a handful of things, most of which you’ve already heard of. Here’s what actually comes for Yorkshire businesses – and what we do about each one.
Phishing - the dodgy email (and the biggest one by miles)
An email that looks legit - from your bank, a supplier, even your own MD - designed to trick someone into handing over a password or paying a fake invoice. It's behind the vast majority of breaches because it skips the technology entirely and goes straight for the human.
What we do: Smart email filtering that catches most of it before it lands, plus training that helps your team spot the rest. Belt and braces.
This means: Advanced email filtering, link and attachment scanning, anti-impersonation, and simulated phishing tests so the training sticks.
Ransomware - the digital hostage situation
This is the one that makes the news. Your files get scrambled, and someone demands money to unscramble them. It's rarer than phishing - but when it lands, it can stop a business dead.
What we do: Layered defences to keep it out, and a properly tested backup so that if the worst happens, the answer is “we’ll restore it” – not “how much do they want?”
This means: Endpoint detection and response, immutable backups that attackers can’t encrypt or delete, and a rehearsed recovery plan.

Weak passwords & stolen logins -the unlocked back door
One reused password from a leaked website, and suddenly someone's in your email reading everything. No hacking required - they just walked in with a key you didn't know you'd left out.
What we do: Multi-factor authentication (the text-code or app tap you’ve seen on banking apps), so a stolen password on its own gets them precisely nowhere.
This means: MFA across every cloud service, conditional access, and a move toward passwordless/passkey authentication where it fits.
Out-of-date software - the open window
Every app and laptop gets security holes over time. Updates patch them. Skip the updates, and you've left a window open for anyone who knows where to look.
What we do: We keep everything patched and current automatically, so the windows close before anyone climbs through.
This means: Managed patching with critical and high-severity fixes applied inside 14 days – which, handily, is now a Cyber Essentials requirement too.
The honest mistake - your team, on a bad day
The biggest vulnerability in any business isn't a server. It's a well-meaning human being who's busy, tired, and clicked before they thought. It happens to everyone.
What we do: Friendly, plain-English security awareness training that turns your team from the weakest link into your first line of defence – no fear, no jargon, no making anyone feel daft.
This means: Your team have the tools they need to handle your cyber security before it becomes a threat.
There's No Magic Box. There Are Layers to cyber security.
Every so often someone tries to sell businesses a single “cyber security product” – one box, one tick, job done. We’ll be straight with you: that box doesn’t exist.
Good cyber security works like a good building. Not one enormous lock on the front door, but locks, an alarm, lights on a timer, and a neighbour who keeps an eye out. If one layer gets past, the next one’s there. That’s what “multi-layered defence” actually means, minus the brochure-speak.
- At the Front Door: Firewalls and email filtering, stopping most threats before they ever reach a person.
- On Every Device: Endpoint protection that spots and blocks dodgy behaviour, on the office desktop and the laptop at the kitchen table alike.
- At Login: Multi-factor authentication, so a stolen password isn't a stolen business.
- In the Background: Monitoring that watches for anything odd, around the clock, so problems get caught while they're small.
- For your Teams: Training that helps everyone spot a scam before they click.
- Your Safety Net: Backups that are tested and ready, so "we lost it" becomes "we restored it."
Cyber Essentials: The Badge That Opens Doors
If you only do one formal thing this year, make it this.
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification covering five basic security controls every business should have anyway – firewalls, secure setup, access control, malware protection, and keeping things updated. Get certified, and you get a badge that tells clients, insurers, and bigger partners: this business takes security seriously.
It’s increasingly not optional. Plenty of public sector contracts now require it. More and more private clients ask for it before they’ll work with you. And cyber insurers are starting to tie your premium to it.
The Myth That Costs Businesses the Most
Quick question: If a ransomware attack hit tomorrow and scrambled every file you’ve got, do you know – for certain – that you could get them all back?
Most people assume “it’s in the cloud, so we’re covered.” It’s the most common and the most expensive assumption in business IT. Microsoft keeps the platform running brilliantly, but recovering your data after a ransomware hit or an accidental mass-deletion? That’s on you, not them.
A real backup – automated, tested, and out of an attacker’s reach – is the difference between a stressful hour and a closed business. We set yours up so a disaster becomes a non-event.
The Difference Between Backing Up and Losing It All.
It’s a cold, bright Tuesday in Leeds. A thin layer of frost covers the ground as business owners across Yorkshire open their doors for another day of work. On Oakfield Street, two neighboring businesses – Briarwood Accounting and Hawthorn Digital Marketing – are settling in for what they assume will be a typical day.
Neither knows that by lunchtime, a blown transformer will cause a major power outage across their business park, and by day’s end, one company will recover smoothly while the other faces potential ruin…

Cyber Security Questions, Answered Honestly
Do small businesses really need dedicated cyber security?
Yes and we’d gently push back on anyone who says otherwise. Small and medium businesses are now the favourite target for cyber criminals, precisely because their defences are often weaker than a big corporation’s. The good news is that strong, genuinely affordable protection is well within reach for most SMEs and it’s a fraction of the cost of cleaning up after an incident.
What are the most common cyber threats facing UK businesses?
Phishing – dodgy emails designed to trick your team – is the biggest by a mile, sitting behind the vast majority of breaches. After that comes ransomware (your files held hostage), stolen or reused passwords, out-of-date software, and plain old human error. Our layered approach is built to handle all of them, not just the headline-grabbing ones.
What does "multi-layered defence" mean?
It means we don’t rely on a single tool to keep you safe. We layer email filtering, device protection, multi-factor authentication, round-the-clock monitoring, regular updates, staff training, and reliable backups. If one layer is bypassed, the next one’s there to catch the threat and limit the damage. Think locks, alarm, and lights – not one big padlock.
What is Cyber Essentials, and should we get certified?
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification covering five core security controls. For most SMEs it’s the sensible baseline, and it’s increasingly required to win public sector contracts, work with larger clients, or satisfy cyber insurers. We help businesses prepare for and pass both Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus. (The scheme tightened up in April 2026 – MFA on all cloud services is now mandatory – but that’s exactly the sort of thing we set up as standard.)
Will all this security slow my team down?
This is the worry we hear most, and the honest answer is: done properly, no. Good security runs quietly in the background. The aim is protection your team barely notices – not endless logins and blocked files. If a security setup is frustrating people, it’s been configured badly, and we’d happily take a look.
What happens if we get attacked despite all the protection?
No honest provider will promise you’re 100% immune – so we don’t. What we do promise is a plan. We build an incident response plan with you covering how we detect, contain, and recover from an attack, who needs to know, and how we keep you running. If something happens, you’ll have a clear point of contact and a team that acts – not panics.
Do you provide cyber security for businesses outside Bradford?
Absolutely. We’re proudly Bradford-based and look after businesses right across Leeds, Sheffield, and the wider Yorkshire area and beyond. Being local means when you need us, you get someone who knows your setup and your patch.
Isn't proper cyber security expensive?
It’s a lot less expensive than a breach. Most of what protects you – MFA, updates, training, sensible email filtering – is more about doing the basics consistently than buying expensive kit. We build it into one predictable monthly fee, so there are no surprises and no reason to keep putting it off.
