Introduction

In 2020 CIPHR purchased Digits Industries to add a Learning Management System (LMS) to their portfolio; as we had provided server support to Digits for their Portsmouth data centre since 2017, our contract was transferred to CIPHR.

Our Response

To enable us to provide efficient remote support and avoid hardware failures causing downtime and impacting client services, we installed additional equipment. MD Adam Bovan met with Digits’ IT Director to audit their existing hardware/systems, and our IT project team duplicated/configured switches, servers and firewalls so that in the event of failure we could immediately switch over and maintain services while carrying out repairs. We sent these to the site, where they were installed by the on-site IT support team under Adam’s direction.

In 2020, following Digits’ acquisition by CIPHR, we carried out a six-month programme to consolidate hardware, delivering cost savings and improving onboarding speed for new CIPHR customers. By moving to separating data through security and consolidating web servers, we’ve saved CIPHR c.£70,000 in hardware, manpower and maintenance costs.

In November 2020, we began planning a three-phase project, led by Adam, to further consolidate the Digits infrastructure into CIPHR, migrating services to a single data centre and from 50+ servers to just under 10. This planning phase was crucial to fully understand service inter-dependencies, and ensure data could be migrated with no loss and no impact for CIPHR customers.

Results

As CIPHR’s service is required 24/7, our systems monitor the service every 30 seconds, and on-call staff are alerted within five minutes of any issues, in line with our SLA. RTO is within 4 hours – we have comfortably met this 100% to date.
