Raise awareness of cybersecurity among your team
According to a recent report, 40% of data security breaches were due to employee negligence or accidental loss. Below are some tips on how you can raise awareness of cybersecurity among your team and reduce your chance of a data breach in the future.
Educate your team.
Almost everyone is aware of the importance of cybersecurity nowadays; however, there’s always something new to learn as systems and technology evolve.
Set up regular security training and reminders for your staff to keep the topic at the forefront of their minds.
Avoid the information falling on deaf ears by creating easy-to-understand materials and policies so that everyone can follow your security best practice.
Review current access privileges.
Do you know for sure who has access to what data in your business?
For example, there could be members of your team who have access to sensitive data that they do not need for their day-to-day jobs.
While there’s nothing wrong with trusting your team, accidents do happen and weaken your cybersecurity. Please don’t leave it to chance – revoke any access privileges to sensitive data that aren’t required.
Removing access is also essential whenever someone leaves your company. There have been a number of reports where disgruntled members of staff have maliciously leaked data from their ex-employers.
Learn from past mistakes.
While having strict policies and procedures to follow in case of a security breach is important, it’s vital to update these documents as and when new breaches occur to prevent the same thing happening twice.
If you have experienced a breach, or a risk has been flagged, take the time to investigate the issue and update your approach accordingly.
Invest in systems to detect breaches.
Even if your team is fully trained and your policies/procedures are watertight, there’s still a chance that a breach could occur.
Make sure you invest in robust systems and software to deter any threats or breaches slipping through.
And, as we always stress, ensure all of your software is up-to-date so it can stay one step ahead of the latest threats and viruses out there.
